Iriver Story ebook reader device comes with built-in PIM applications / 01.12.2009 07:37
Even though the Amazon Kindle ebook reader device ignited the lust for ebooks among avid readers, competing products haven't really copied the Kindle design or functionality. For a device designed for reading alone, the Kindle has a remarkably large keyboard. Weird, isn't it? Well, there must be a way to enter book titles, descriptions for bookmarks, and other brief items even if the device is meant for reading alone. That's why the latest ebook reader devices are incorporating touch screens to make it easier for readers to occasionally type a word or two.
Korean company Iriver has decided to follow the example set by the Amazon Kindle. The Iriver Story ebook reader device has large hardware keyboard below the black-and-white ebook display. The overall design of the Iriver Story resembles the Kindle as well. There is a perfectly good reason for the keyboard in the Iriver Story; the device comes with personal information management applications, such as calendar, memo, and diary.
If the name Iriver reminds you of something, this is the same company that fiercely competed against the Apple iPod in the early days of MP3 players. Naturally, the Story device can also play MP3 music and podcasts.
The Iriver Story comes with 6-inch e-ink display that's specifically designed for text. The resolution of the display is 800x600 pixels. Although Iriver is advertising the ebook reader for photo and cartoon viewing, we don't recommend it, because it can only display eight shades of grey (no colors). The e-ink technology makes the Iriver Story suitable for viewing text documents, like Epub, PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT, and TXT. Ebooks and audio files can be copied to the Iriver Story via USB cable or via SD memory cards. The rechargeable battery can display about 7000 ebook pages per charge.
If you want to find out more about Iriver products, we recommend checking out Amazon or any other web site, except the Iriver corporate web site. It is simply one of the poorest page designs we have ever seen that's practically impossible to access. Iriver products that we have seen and tried out, however, have been well designed, feature-rich devices.

Does it have any wireless connectivity features?
Also, how does the screen contrast compare with the Amazon Kindle? Is the background a whiter white than that of the Kindle?
