How to Upload Photos and Videos to Facebook from a Camera Phone

December 26, 2007

Facebook is such an addictive online destination that many users would like to let friends know what is going on even in the middle of a visit to a shopping mall. If you have a camera phone and want to update your Facebook page, you don't have to wait until you have access to a PC. You can upload photos and videos to Facebook directly from a camera phone. We'll show you how.

There are several mobile phone applications available for Facebook, but only a few of those products satisfied our criteria. We discovered three mobile photo and video applications for Facebook that were easy to install and use, and that could be used across the world. These applications are not tied to a particular mobile phone company or to a certain camera phone, and they can be used wherever you happen to be.

We recommend the Zannel solution for Facebook members who want to upload both pictures and videos and who have an email application on the phone that allows sending attachments. Shozu, on the other hand, is the best solution for those people who want to upload photos only. Shozu is by far the easiest solution to use. The third solution, Mobypal, is a comprehensive solution for posting pictures and videos to Facebook, but it still had some beta software problems.

No matter which solution you choose, make sure that you have a data plan that allows transmitting megabytes worth of data from your phone at a reasonable cost. Keep in mind that, for instance, a photo taken on a 2-megapixel camera is about 0.5-1MB in size. Videos can be even larger. Smartphone owners who have Wi-Fi connectivity on their phones can upload files via free Wi-Fi hotspots as well.

How to use Zannel for sending videos and pictures to Facebook from a camera phone

Zannel is straight-forward to set up and use once you have email access on your phone. You have to be able to send email messages with attached pictures and videos. If you are not sure how to set up email access for your phone, check out this guide.

1. Start by installing Zannel into your Facebook account. Click the Zannel application in Facebook. Enter the required registration information for your Zannel account. Your photo album will be stored on the Zannel Web site, but Facebook can display the items stored in the album.

2. When your registration is complete, you will get a special upload email address for Zannel. Keep the address to yourself. All photos and videos you send to this address will be automatically posted on your Facebook page.

3. Save the email address in the address book of your camera phone so that you don't have to type it every time you want to upload photos.

4. Take a photo or record a video on your camera phone. Attach it to an email message and send it to your private Zannel email address.

5. View your Facebook profile.

How to use Shozu for uploading photos to Facebook from a camera phone

If you only want to post photos, Shozu is the recommended choice for mobile Facebook updates because it is the easiest solution to use and it organizes your uploads into a Facebook photo album. Besides Facebook uploads, Shozu is useful for other things, like automating photo posting to many blog systems, photo albums, and online maps.

1. Visit the Shozu Web site to verify that your phone is compatible with the software. If it is, sign up to the service and download their application to your phone. Follow the installation instructions carefully.

2. In order to upload pictures to Facebook, you have to set it as a 'Share-It' destination in Shozu. Again, you have to patiently follow the instructions. When Shozu takes you to Facebook to confirm account details, pay attention to the optional fields. You may want to activate unrestricted photo uploading so you don’t have to approve every new image before it is displayed in Facebook.

3. Once you have set everything up and Shozu is activated, take a photo on your camera phone. Shozu will ask if you want to send the image to Facebook. If you are happy with the picture, approve it.

4. Logon to Facebook. If this was your first Shozu upload, Facebook will ask your permission to create a new photo album. Accept the request.

5. You can view your mobile photos in the album displayed on the left column in your Facebook profile.

How to use Mobypal to upload photos and camera-phone movies to Facebook

Mobypal is a blog service with a piece of software for camera phones that allows posting pictures and videos to Facebook. Mobypal is still in beta, which means that it can have unexpected behaviors. After we had solved some problems with the software installation, Mobypal worked well.

1. Create a Mobypal blog account for yourself.

2. Download the Mobypal application to your camera phone. We downloaded a Java application to our phone, because the operating system-specific application Mobypal provided wasn’t compatible with our smartphone.

3. Install Mobypal to your Facebook account. Click this link to connect your Mobypal blog to your Facebook account.

4. Launch Mobypal on your phone. Take a new picture or pick up an existing photo or video and send it to Facebook.

5. The image will appear on your Mobypal blog. It can also be accessed from your Faceboook profile page. If the photo or video can be viewed on Mobypal, but not on Facebook, check the settings for the image. You have to set “Public” access for the images that you want to display in Facebook.

It is possible to view Facebook on a mobile phone as well. Launch the Web browser on your phone, type m.facebook.com and login to your account.
