Small GPS tracker Haicom HI-602DT can call home and display its location on a map / News 19.12.2008 05:27
Tracking devices that use GPS technology for pinpointing the exact location of a vehicle or person come in many shapes and sizes (for instance, Tramigo T22 which we reviewed here). Only one thing is common; the person or object who is being tracked has to carry the device and the battery inside the unit must be charged. The challenge for manufacturers is to find an easy and economical way to report back home the location of the GPS device. Hicom has invented a novel solution. The Hicom HI-602DT is a small (43x69x18mm), Zippo lighter-size device that can receive GPS satellite signals for determining the location. It also has built-in GSM phone for reporting the location back home. So, you need a dedicated SIM card that is always inside GPS device.
The Hicom HI-602DT comes with a separate Decoder module that lets you view the unit's location on a map in real time. Here's how it works. Launch a map application, like Google Maps on your PC. Plug the Decoder into a USB port on your PC. Dial the GPS tracker's phone number. When it answers, hold the Decoder near the loudspeaker of the phone. The Decoder receives GPS coordinates via the phone line and passes them on to the map software, which displays the location on the screen.
The Hicom HI-602DT can also send its location via text messages. It is possible to specify an out-of-bounds area that causes an alarm if the device enters the area. Accessories are available for installing the unit into a car or attaching it to a schoolbag. There are no subscription costs, only the product cost and GSM network tariff.
