Topographic maps on a smartphone lets you navigate beyond the road network / News 10.02.2009 05:40

ViewRanger
The prices of GPS receivers have fallen so low that a rapidly increasing number of mobile phones and smartphones come with built-in GPS. Of course, it is also possible to attach an external receiver, like the Holux M-241 or the Qstarz BT-Q1200 to the phone. Maps are needed as well, like Wayfinder or Nokia Maps. So, you are all set, unless you are heading to the great outdoors, beyond streets and roads. You have GPS, but topographic maps are missing?

ViewRanger has brought topographic digital maps to smartphones. A device with GPS receiver can be used for navigation in the wilderness, identifying location, finding where friends are (who are sharing their location), sharing own location to friends, keeping track of distance, speed, direction, and attaching geographic coordinates to photos for posting them on a map.

The ViewRanger product can be downloaded for free to try it out. Because of extensive information included in the maps, a map package has to be purchased separately for each country where you want to roam in the great outdoors. Topographic maps are available for UK, France, Germany, Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Finland, Belgium, Ireland, and Netherlands. You need a Symbian/S60 device, like a Nokia Nseries or a Samsung product with GPS receiver to run ViewRanger on your phone. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is also compatible with the software.
