Datawind Ubisurfer
Netbook PCs are compact and light devices that are easy to take along almost anywhere. Often, however, the restrictive factor is lack of Internet connection. Not every park, mall, or railway station provides wireless Wi-Fi access for accidental web surfers. A number of new netbooks come with 3G connectivity that allows Internet access via mobile network. 3G network is practically the only solution for those netbook users who are on the move. So, the optimal solution would be a netbook with 3G connectivity, but without the premium mobile networks tend to charge for high-speed data plans.

The Datawind Ubisurfer is a compact netbook aimed at web surfing or anything you can access with a browser application. The device has 7-inch screen in 800x480 resolution. The unit weighs only 700 grams. It is 22 cm wide, 16.5 cm tall, and 3 cm thick. Rechargeable battery provides 4 hours worth of power for the device. Wi-Fi connection and Ethernet port provide Internet access if the included monthly quota has been consumed or mobile network signal is weak. Three USB ports and SD memory card slot are also included.

The Ubisurfer has been optimized for web access. It comes with 1GB storage space, for example, for music. You shouldn't expect to be able to download additional applications to the device, but rely on applications and services that can be accessed with a web browser. The netbook is powered by Linux software.

The Ubisurfer netbook with Internet access plan is priced at £160. At the moment, the built-in 3G module connects to Vodafone UK network. In the UK, 30 hours per month of free network access is included for the first year. Second year costs £30. If 30 hours per month is not enough, it is possible to get an unlimited plan for £6 per month. Roaming charges apply to overseas 3G usage.
