In addition to free phone calls, Fring smartphone application provides free video calls / 27.11.2009 05:23
Although most mobile phone users consider their call rates relatively costly, only a few technology pioneers try free phone calls when they learn about the possibility. Most people are aware of Skype service that can be accessed on a PC, but only a few pioneers have tried it on their smartphones. This is puzzling because Skype provides free phone calls for smartphones as well. If your phone isn't compatible with Skype, other options are available. For instance, Fring and Truphone services provide free and low-cost phone calls for smartphones as well. But what if you want video calls like on a PC webcam? No problem. Here's how.
Fring application, which lets you make free phone calls to Skype users and low-cost calls to any number, now includes video call feature. Install the free Fring application to your smartphone. We use our Skype account in Fring because we get access to our Skype contacts and SkypeOut, but it is not the only way to use Fring. Anyhow, if you initiate a call to a Skype contact that has video calls enabled, you can make a free video call to the contact from Fring. There is some delay in the Fring video call, but hey, it is free. The trick is that Fring (as well as Skype and other Voip systems) calls are carried via the Internet using any available Wi-Fi hotspot (or 3G connection if you have a generous data plan).
Fring Voip (Voice over Internet) application is compatible with Android, iPhone, Symbian S60, and Windows Mobile smartphone. The video call feature is currently available for touch screen Nokia devices only, but Fring said they are going to port the video call feature to other smartphones as well. You can download Fring to your phone here. Another smartphone Voip service that lets you make free video calls is Tivi. Check out our smartphone Voip application review here.
