Waterproof compact camera Pentax Optio WS80 can capture high-definition (HD) video / 01.12.2009 07:50
Over the last couple of years, we have accidentally destroyed two compact cameras. The first one didn't survive the combination of cold and wet action in the snow and the second camera didn't survive a fall into wet and smelly swampland. Oh well. Someone with brains would have used a rugged camera or water resistant camera in such outdoors conditions. Manufacturers, like Fuji, Olympus, and Pentax have models that are either waterproof or rugged or both, after all. But in these days of YouTube video and HDTV, can any of the outdoors cameras capture high-definition (HD) video? Yes, a new camera model from Pentax can record HD video.
The Pentax Optio WS80 is a waterproof compact camera with 10 megapixel image sensor and 5 times optical zoom lens. The camera has been tested to be operational for two hours in 1.5 meter deep water. The most notable feature of the tiny camera is that it can capture HD video in 1280x720 resolution at 30 fps (frames per second).
All and all, the camera has a pretty attractive combination of features: waterproof, 10 megapixel still images, 5 times optical zoom, and HD video. Other features of the Pentax Optio WS80 are, for instance, ISO sensitivity up to 6400 and digital image stabilization both for still and video images. Videos are saved in AVI format and pictures in JPG. Only one track (mono) of audio is recorded. Built-in flash makes it possible to take photos indoors. The camera accepts full-size SD memory cards. Here's an important feature for ambitious home video directors: the Pentax Optio WS80 has a standard tripod mount at the bottom. The dimensions of the tiny camera are 92 × 60 × 22 mm.
