Hundred-dollar laptop is here; Cherrypal Africa / 17.12.2009 04:57
For a few years, the world has been waiting for the hundred-dollar laptop envisioned by MIT's Nicholas Negroponte. His initiative has led to One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project and organization that is marketing uniquely designed laptops for school children in developing countries. The OLPC laptop, however, still costs 200 dollars. Now, a Hong Kong based company Cherrypal has managed to break the magical 100 dollar barrier.
The Cherrypal Africa is a compact netbook that is selling for 99 dollars. It comes with 7-inch color screen in 800x480 resolution, Ethernet port, Wi-Fi, USB, SD memory card slot, loudspeaker, and microphone. The basic configuration has 256 MB of RAM memory for running applications and 2GB of flash memory for storing data and applications. The Cherrypal Africa is powered by Linux or Windows CE operating system. In capable hands, Linux makes more sense in this laptop, because of availability of open source and freeware applications.
Naturally, you can't get a powerful all-round PC for 100 dollars. The 400Mhz processor that's ticking inside the Cherrypal Africa makes it suitable for web browsing, reading and writing. The unit weighs 1.2kg. Its dimensions are 21 x 14 x 31 cm. Lithium-ion battery provides up to 4 hours of power for the laptop. You can find the 99-dollar laptop here.
