Practical advice on mobile devices

Personal surveillance system on a smartphone

February 1, 2010

We don't necessarily come to think of mobile phones as safety devices, but among many other things, that's what they are. The obvious mobile phone safety application is to dial the emergency number when you, or someone else, really need help. What if there's no time to make a phone call? There's an app for that, too.

JTrek

JTrek smartphone application is a personal surveillance system that can collect valuable information about dangerous and emergency situations. JTrek system consists of two components; an application that's downloaded to a smartphone and an online service that automatically receives information from the smartphone and informs the right people.

First, you have to download the JTrek application to your smartphone. Then, you create your personal account into the service. Your photos, videos and messages will be stored onto the account and forwarded to preset recipients whenever required.

When the JTrek system is active on your smartphone, there are two ways to manage personal safety. Whenever you suspect something is wrong, you can take a photo or record a video that's uploaded to your JTrek account. If your smartphone has a GPS receiver, your exact location is added to the photos and videos.

If there's an imminent danger, you can simply push the Panic button on the phone. The button is provided by JTrek application (it is not a physical key on the device). JTrek will alert specified people by sending text messages to them.

One more thing to consider: you have to be in mobile network coverage for JTrek to work.
