Practical advice on mobile devices

Archos 7 tablet will find its place in living room or bedroom

March 4, 2010

Archos has been a visionary company in mobile devices. It launched a portable MP3 player three years before the Apple iPod saw the light of day and portable multimedia tablets way before the Apple iPad was announced. Now, Archos has decided to enhance its tablet product range by introducing a handheld 7-inch tablet for home use.

Archos 7 Home Tablet

The Archos 7 Home Tablet is a handheld multimedia device for web access and for enjoying music, videos and movies. The tablet comes with 7-inch touch screen that's installed in a slim 12 mm body. The unit weighs 350 grams (0.8 Ibs). As its name implies, the Archos 7 is aimed at homes where Wi-Fi access points are available for media sharing and for Internet access. USB port is also available for PC connection or for USB memory stick.

The Archos 7 Home Tablet is built on Android operating system software. If Android sounds familiar to you, you are probably right. Android is becoming a popular software in smartphones, but Archos has decided to use Android also in tablet products.

The tablet comes with web browser and a variety of applications, for instance, for viewing YouTube videos. Perhaps power management is one of the reasons for using Android in tablets becuse the Archos 7 battery can play 7 hours of video and 44 hours of music at a charge.

Archos seems determined to keep the price for the Home Tablet product range low. The list prices for the Archos 7 start from £129 which is considerably less than, for instance, the Camangi Webstation.
