Nokia N73: Review

At first glance, the Nokia N73 may look like any other camera phone. On closer inspection, however, its large screen requires attention. It can display photos and maps in such colors and detail that this feature alone made us curious about the whole product. We discovered some exciting things, such as the best search features we have seen on any mobile device, a handy multimedia key, a photo upload to Flickr, and a camera that can capture beautiful 3 megapixel pictures.

Nokia N73

Key features:

  • 3.2 megapixel (2048x1536) digital camera with Carl Zeiss autofocus lens. Focus range from 4 inch/10 cm to infinity. There's no optical zoom.
  • A good flash for a camera phone and the option to adjust many image exposure attributes both greatly improve the chances of getting good pictures.
  • Video recorder can capture movies in MP4 and 3GP formats. The highest quality MP4 videos are saved in 352x288 pixel resolution, up to 15 frames per second. This means a good quality resolution for showing off on YouTube.
  • 3G WCDMA/UMTS (WCDMA 2100) and quadband GSM mobile network coverage (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz bands).
  • 2.4 inch color screen with 240x320 pixel resolution (QVGA). The screen can show up to 262,144 colors.
  • Polyphonic and MP3 ringtones.
  • The music player can play AAC, MP3, and WMA tracks. Built-in stereo FM radio. Stereo speakers in the unit and a white stereo headset with a microphone included.
  • The RealPlayer multimedia software can play videos and movies in H.263 and MPEG4 format.
  • E-mail (POP3 and IMAP4), web browser (HTML and XHTML, meaning it can display practically all web pages), calendar, document viewer for Word, Excel and PDF files.
  • Bluetooth 2.0 and infrared wireless connectivity.
  • USB cable for syncing calendar, notes, and other information with a PC.
  • MiniSD memory card slot. There wasn't a memory card in the package we opened up, but the contents may vary by region. 42MB of internal phone memory.
  • Operating system Symbian OS version 9.1 with S60 3rd Edition software. The device can also run Java MIDP 2.0 applications.

A photo of white roses taken with the N73 camera.

Let's begin our tour with the most prominent features of the Nokia N73: the camera and the screen. The easiest way to activate the camera is to slide down the lens cover at the back of the unit. When you do that, the menus and the viewfinder automatically turn sideways. In effect, the phone screen has become a large, landscape-oriented viewfinder, and the shutter button is now at the top of the unit. The placement of the shutter button encourages you to support the camera with both hands.

The image quality in the Nokia N73 is very good when compared to other 2 and 3 megapixel camera phones. Especially, photos taken in low light have improved a light year from the pictures that some other models, such as the Nokia N90 could capture. You can set the image resolution to 3, 2, 0.8, or 0.3 megapixels. Pictures captured in 3 megapixel-mode show heavy compression when you copy the pictures to a computer and view them on the screen in full size.

Nokia N73 from the front

The video recorder did an excellent job. For example, if you move the lens while you are recording, the lens stays focused on the closest objects, making them look sharp on the video. We liked the video quality a lot.

In addition to the three camera-related buttons on the side panel (on the top panel when you use it as a camera), there is a handy Multimedia key in the numeric keypad. It is located at the right edge of the keypad. You can set the Multimedia Key to launch any four programs you want. For example, when you are viewing photos, you might want to have some background music. Tap the Multimedia Key and push the navigation key (joystick) to the left to go directly to the Music Player, where you can choose MP3 tracks. You can set the Multimedia Key to launch any applications you want.

The Nokia N73 comes with a Web Upload feature that lets you upload pictures directly to the Flickr photo-sharing service. Naturally, it is still possible to share photos on Flickr by emailing them or share videos by uploading them via MMS to YouTube. ShoZu, a separate downloadable application, lets you also upload photos and videos to the above mentioned and many other media sharing sites.

The 3G WCDMA/UMTS connectivity allows high-speed access to the Internet and e-mail. Because the Nokia N73 is powered by the Symbian OS/S60 smartphone software (Windows Mobile is capable of doing the same), there's more than high speed in the game. For example, you can download MP3 music directly to the device at the same time you are chatting on the phone. We measured speeds between 120 and 160 Kbps for the 3G connection, but this can vary a lot depending on your location. There is no Wi-Fi in the Nokia N73.

We were about to have a conversation with a friend who usually has a lot to say, so we plugged the white stereo headset that was included with the product into the unit. During the conversation, our friend pointed out that there's a useful application on the phone, titled Download! While he was telling us about it, we launched the application and downloaded the Yahoo! Go product to the device. There were absolutely no (technology related) hiccups during the conversation while the download completed via the 3G connection.

The e-mail, MMS, text messaging, and web-browsing features worked as expected. We were happy with the phone-call features and the audio quality during the calls.

"Now I understand what a smartphone is!" a friend rejoiced when we demonstrated to him the Search application that comes with the Nokia N73. He had never used a smartphone, because he thought they offered nothing for him. After seeing the mobile Search on the N73, he knew better. The Search application is one of the first smartphone innovations that practically every phone user will need. It is intuitive to use, and it delivers concrete benefits to users.

The Search application lets you enter search words and then decide if you want to find information from the Web, among Images on the Web, or from local business listings. If you search the Web, either Yahoo or Microsoft Live (you can choose which one) returns the results. If you need local information, you can search for businesses and services in a country that you specify. The local search feature is not available in every country of the world. We tried London, where it worked brilliantly, returning listings of nearby services, and showing their locations on a clear, easy-to-read map.

N73 search application's map result 1
Local search results can be viewed as a list or as a map

While we discovered a few exciting new features, and found that many familiar features were working well, we encountered problems in some essential features. Particularly, accessing the camera was risky business. Sometimes, the device stalled when we tried to switch to another application without closing the camera. A set of image exposure tools is constantly available in the camera viewfinder screen. We are not convinced that it is the right way to expose camera features to users, and we suspect it contributed to the camera's shaky performance.

These camera design problems bothered us to the extent that we decided to try out a new service from Nokia. If you suspect that your phone is behaving oddly because of software problems, you don't have to take it to an authorized service center anymore for re-programming (for re-flashing the memory). You can re-program the device with the latest available software release yourself. Download the Nokia Software Updater to your PC and follow the instructions.

This service is excellent news for Nokia phone owners who are not afraid of tweaking their phones. The software update will wipe out everything from the phone memory and replace the memory with a new software release. This means that all your information (for instance, contacts, photos, messages) and settings (e-mail configuration, all your own ringtones) you have stored on your phone memory will disappear. Items that you have stored on a memory card won't be affected.

By now, you might realize that the Nokia Software Updater is not for the faint-hearted. We tried it, and it worked well with the Nokia N73 reviewed here. The phone is stable, and it feels like it is running the applications faster. However, if anything goes wrong, and the phone memory is damaged in the process, you may have to bear the potentially expensive repair costs yourself. [UPDATED Nov 30th: Nokia FAQ states that phone is repaired under the usual warranty terms and conditions. USA, UK Faq] If you don't like risks, take the phone to a service center.

A less exciting new feature in the Nokia N73 is a blinking blue light that begins to flash when you haven't used your phone for a few minutes. If you are using your phone as an alarm clock, the blue light in a dark room flashes like a police light on the roof of a patrol car. We couldn't figure out a sensible reason why we should have the light on. Its task is to let you know that the device is in Sleep mode. You can (and you will, after your first night together with your new companion) disable it by following this sequence: go to the Main Menu, Tools, Settings, Phone, Display, Sleep Mode. Set the value of Sleep Mode to Off.

Examples of popular products that compete with the Nokia N73 are, for example, the Sony Ericsson K800i, the Samsung SGH-D900, and the Nokia N70

Who likes this product:

The Nokia N73 will attract anyone who wants a powerful smartphone/camera phone that doesn't look too flashy or high-tech. Its large screen and 3-megapixel camera are among the best we have seen in camera phones so far.

Style:

When people, who do not follow new products as closely as we do, see the phone, their first impression often is "What a beautiful, large screen!", or "Which Sony Ericsson model is this?" Oh, well. The product design is classic rather than flashy high-tech style. We have seen a couple of different color schemes for the N73. The red-and-cream color scheme of the test unit was stylish. The unit is about the size of an average phone. Its physical dimensions are: height 4.33 inches/110 mm, width 1.93 inches/49 mm, and thickness (max) 0.75 inches/19 mm.

Nokia N73 and the camera

Value for the money: 4.5 out of 5

The Nokia N73 is a very good value for the money if you want classic style, and a powerful camera phone that can capture beautiful images. Make sure you get the latest software release with the product so you'll avoid problems with the camera. Useful smartphone features are beginning to make their way into everyday life, as the Search application clearly demonstrates. Take time to learn the new features. They may make many of the challenges of our increasingly complex lives a little bit easier to manage.

I like the review very much and you have many valid points. However there is one mistake in the text. Quote: "However, if anything goes wrong, and the phone memory is damaged in the process, you may have to bear the potentially expensive repair costs yourself". This is incorrect. Nokia have said that if someone goes wrong during the update with NSU Nokia will cover this as long as the phone is under warranty (warrany is 2 years if the phone is bought after 01.04.2005). Source: NSU FAQ nr.38: My phone "died" during an update, what should I do? Take the phone to your nearest Nokia Care point. If the phone is within its warranty period, Nokia will repair the phone under the usual warranty terms and conditions. If the phone is not within its warranty period, Nokia is not liable for any loss as defined within the End-User Software Agreement.

I bought the phone a month ago and I think this is the best Nokia device I have ever used. One negative point that I have to say is that the camera softaware is buggy and the phone might crash because of it. I also think that Nokia has taken a step in the wrong direction when designing the new S60 web browser because it doesn't support the use of CSS Style Sheets designed escpecially for mobile browsers.

editor@avecmobile.com 29.11.2006 23:15

Thank you for the correction, Henrik. That's good news. Our cautionary advice was based on the clauses 9 and 10 in the "Nokia corporation end-user software agreement". It seems to be a pretty standard limitation of liability clause software vendors tend to use, which leaves the risk of potential direct or indirect damages to the user.

To convert video files to a format that you can view on your phone, you might want to try Nokia Multimedia Converter or Video Converter products. Here's more information: http://www.avecmobile.com/index.php?id=797

im planning on possibly getting this phone.i used it in a phone shop today (2/2/07).it did appear slightly sluggish and i understand what everyone has said now.however, due to software updates being available, have nokia not released the phone AS NEW with the NEW SOFTWARE UPDATE yet?this happened with the nokia 6111.

wege 03.02.2007 06:58

Any phone at any shop may have left the factory months ago, and may have old software. If your shop doesn't have the facilities for updating the software, try the Nokia software update yourself. It worked for me.

My n73 is workin fine, but i have problem regarding the phone's memory. it keeps displaying things like "memory full. delete data" but when i checked in the app.manager, my phone memory isn't even close to being 1/4 full! Need help. Thanks.

Ari 04.02.2007 07:49

Chinook, view these tips: http://www.avecmobile.com/index.php?id=897 It can be tricky to separate the phone's internal memory space and the memory card storage space and their status, but usually only one or the other is full, not both.

Vikas 23.04.2007 06:28

Hey... my N73 Music edition is working fine. One problem though..It does not list any MP3 or .wav files in Profile Ringtone selector...Only ring tones that are listed are *.AAC & midi :( Any idea how to get rid of this..

ericksson 24.04.2007 08:08

Vikas - cp your MP3s to the Sound clips/Digital sounds folder on the memory card.

Khalid Ansari 24.04.2007 23:55

Hi Rafi, I prefer you can get some free and commercial Antivirus applications for N73 on the web, just use Google. Remember one important advice, DO NOT USE MORE THAN ONE ANTIVIRUS App with your phone, the application might end up with perfromance Issue and ultimately system might HANG-up.

hi i have taken nokia n73 few weeks back and i am facing two issues:- 1. the preloaded songs are not getting activated in my handset. I go the 100 activation key messages have opened each of them and deleted... still it is not gactivated. 2.also i um unable to open PDF file(any file size)to read it. everytime i try opening a PDF file it says 'Not Enough memory and 'Operation Faile' When i check for available memory it shows that more than 1gb memory is free can anybody please help me

Danielle 10.07.2007 18:36

How do you wipe the whole memory of the phone and sim on the nokia n73 - Help Please!!!!

Ari 11.07.2007 01:11

If you get 'Not enough memory' when you try to view PDF files, it is likely that the phone's internal memory doesn't have enough space available to run the viewer program and to load the PDF file. When you are checking the available memory space in File Manager, make sure you check the phone's internal memory.

Nataly 14.07.2007 08:58

Danielle... re-flashing the phone with the new software will erase everything from the phone memory, but SIM is another matter...

Hi there i am having a problem with my phone my slider camera on the back does not work its just pitch black but my camera on the front works. Does anyone know what the problem would be???

Colm 25.09.2007 11:28

Afraid the n73 has been a problem phone for me. It was initially slow and kept on crashing especially when i used the text messages short cut button. Now i have the Not enough memory problem aswell. I have cleaned out my memory card, i have no new applications or have changed anything since it worked a week ago. My phone operator says i corrupted the software? I just use it to ring people take pictures and send messages so not sure how i dont that. Fair enough the camera is quality and the pefect mega pixelage for sending emails. The more these phones become like pocket pc's the more the are going to experience the same crashing and aplicational problems. I give it 4/10

yam, if you are using File Manager (File Mgr) when you are deleting items, make sure that you make space available in the phone's internal memory. The Inbox resides in there. More tips here: http://www.avecmobile.com/index.php?id=897

If you can't play MP4 videos on your phone, the file maybe copy-protected or saved in an incompatible format. Check out this review of PC-to-phone video conversion applications: http://www.avecmobile.com/index.php?id=797 Try to play the video in one of the reviewed applications on a PC. If the program can play the video, it can convert it into a format that's compatible with your phone.

Jojo John, it seems that something - photos, messages, MP3, videos - is eating up your memory space. Have you already checked these tips: http://www.avecmobile.com/index.php?id=897 http://www.avecmobile.com/index.php?id=1009

Help again .. . Nokia N73 camera will not work.and not saying memory is full either .Any Ideas ??

Senthil Kumar 18.07.2008 09:01

go to application manager.. Delete unwanted applications you have installed.. as and when u delete.. the problem of "memory less delete some data" will disappear.. It will work.. I too had the same problem.. Now this is the solution

dukie 22.07.2008 05:13

I am really really getting frustrated..can anyone please tell me how to extend battery life on my N73. I have tried everything, deleted unwanted applications/its locked to DUAL MODE so I cannot disconnect from 3G to GSM/Checked to see if any applications running in background ..etc etc .. Lasting ONE day only and hearing of other N73s that are up to 3/4 days lasting

zeke 23.07.2008 00:41

dukie ... i get 3 days with a recharge... maybe you have a data connection in the background? have you checked active connections - Tools, Connections - if it displays any active data transfer?

paul byrne 23.07.2008 05:16

Hey Zeke, Yea I checked to see and when I hold the menu button to show if any applications running ,the only one it shows up is standby ?? 3 days .. .wish I could get three days out of it !!! any other suggestions ?? maybe coz its permanently in dual mode so cannot disconnect from 3G to GSM ..What do you think ??

dukie 23.07.2008 07:27

Hey Zeke again, Yea it seems I have the standby application running...but cannot select it/remove it..thats the only item that shows up when I press menu key to see whats still running...any ideas ???

hummer88 24.07.2008 00:04
