Skype is the world's favorite telephone application for free and low-cost phone calls. The free Skype application runs on Windows PCs, Macs, Linux computers, Apple iPhone, Nokia Internet tablets, Sony PSP, and on Windows Mobile smartphones. Skype is a true Voip (Voice over Internet) application, capable of managing phone calls between Skype users and ordinary telephones. Phone calls are relayed via the Internet, allowing Skype users to avoid telephone charges altogether. A light edition of Skype application is available for mobile phones that can run Java software.
For one reason or another, Skype hasn't been available for smartphones running on Symbian software. This is surprising, because Symbian is, by far, the world's most popular smartphone software. Now, Skype has decided to do something about it. The company has introduced the first beta release of Skype application for Symbian smartphones. The key features of Skype for Symbian application are free phone calls between Skype users (PC, Mac, phone, any Skype device) and the capability to use SkypeOut credits for phone calls to mobile and landline numbers. It is possible to receive phone calls as well. Instant messaging, group chatting, and file sending and receiving are available. That's an extensive feature list, including practically the same key features that are available for PCs. Skype for Symbian lets you use your phone's Wifi or 3G data connection for free phone calls.
Skype users who don't wish to experiment with beta software can continue using Fring application which is compatible with Skype and has been running on Symbian smartphones for years.
